Whispers in the Dark

The deep northern hills are a far-stretching landscape where beautiful things can happen. They are a land where people can go to soothe themselves, create new, warm, and joyous memories, and they are country where one can find true and out-of-this-world love. They are also a mystical area where strange, unusual things sometimes happen, and where love-hungry beings driven by other-worldly instincts are heard to creep in and whisper to you after dark.

Denise Wheeler owns an old log cabin up in the northern hills, and after years of a dead-end marriage, she’s finally left her worthless husband to fulfill her life-long dream of writing a book, finding true love, and living out the life she’s longed to live. Her pursuit is the greatest decision she’s ever made.

Denise has never been happier, and things have never gone so well for her. But who, or what is it that keeps whispering in her ear after nightfall and carnally having their way with her? She hasn’t got a clue. That’s if it’s anyone at all? Is it someone new, someone she knows, or is it simply her imagination? She’d sure like to know.

Denise paused for a moment and turned from her thoughts to the view before her just outside an open window behind the kitchen sink. She saw Mitch out fiddling around under the bonnet of his truck while Christie put a few things inside. Something must be wrong.

Christie finished and closed the door. She stepped over to Mitch and tapped him on the shoulder. Denise curiously watched and listened. “Mitch . . .” Christie calmly said. He turned his attention to her. “I’ve got to tell you something.”

Mitch stood up straight and curiously listened. She had a real warmth to her tone. “I’m not completely gay . . . in fact, I’m not gay at all. I mean, I was . . . well at least I thought I was. I was in a really bad relationship once, and when I finally had the courage to end it, I was hurt so bad that I had sworn off men altogether. I loved that jerk so much it made me sick. It made me sick to my stomach . . . I thought I was gonna die when I found out he was screwing around on me and continually lying about his life and job all the time. Words can’t explain the emotional toll the whole ordeal took on me. I never thought I could, or would, love any man, or anyone else ever again, let alone trust them. That was until I met you, Mitch. I don’t really think you’re a fat dumb idiot, not at all. Actually, I think you’re one of the smartest, handsomest, trustworthy men I’ve ever known, and I love you. I love you with all my heart and soul. I really, truly do, and I also want to be with you. Please tell me you feel the same way. Please tell me you love me, too.”

Denise stood silently, filled with warm feelings and tears of joy running down her face, watching and listening to Christie pour her heart out.

Mitch stood, quietly staring at Christie, nearly not believing what he had just heard.

Oh . . . tell her you love her too, Mitch. Denise thought, brushing the tears away. You know you do. You, big sappy teddy bear, and just this once, don’t be a smart ass.

“I love you more than you’ll ever know, Christie,” he sincerely replied, looking deeply into her eyes. Christie could feel herself beginning to tremble. “And I swear that I would never intentionally hurt you, or ever wrong you. I’ll love you until my dying breath.”

“I know you will . . . Baby,” Christie calmly said, leaning up and putting her arms around him, “I know you will.” She kissed Mitch on the lips and looked him in the eyes. He put his arms around Christie and kissed her back. The kiss soon turned deep and passionate.

Denise stepped back from the window, continuing to wipe tears away, and to give them some privacy. Oh, man, I’m so damn happy for him I can’t stop crying. And it’s about time. Don’t say anything when they come in though. If they do, try and act surprised.
